A trader made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January rose in the period preceding former President Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

Several of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on Monday would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
